Getting to Tuscany

You can fly to Pisa, Florence, Milan or Rome depending on where you come from. Thereafter, you can reach your final destination in Tuscany by train, coach, or rental car. The easiest way to get around might just be to rent a car as it gives you the flexibility to travel at your own pace and to explore more exclusive or remote places off the beaten track. Although the roads are good in Italy, you might not feel comfortable with driving in a foreign country. Do not worry! There are public and private transportation options that work very well. However, it is still preferable to rent a car if you have a comprehensive itinerary. For the strong hearted, why not explore the countryside by bicycle.

Florence

Siena

Siena is famous for its architecture and art with historical buildings such as the cathedral (Il Duomo), the town hall (Palazzo Pubblico) located in the main square Piazza del Campo with its the famous tower Torre Del Mangia. Il Palio, a horse race that historically dates to the 16th century, is an extraordinary Tuscan event that takes place twice a year in Piazza del Campo in Siena.

When the wilder medieval games, especially bullfights, were forbidden by the Grand Duke of Tuscany in the 16th century the city quarters (contrade) instead started organizing races of different kind that in the end would result in horse races. Still, today, it is a very strong tradition and the city quarters of Siena are in fierce competition with each other to win the Palio.

Pay a visit to Siena in Tuscany during the Palio on 2 July or 16 August to take part up close in a raw but still magical Italian historical tradition.
